The Springfield Armory story spans nearly 250 years of American firearms history. It began in 1777 when General George Washington ordered the establishment of an arsenal in Springfield, Massachusetts, to store ammunition and supplies for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The location was strategically chosen for its position along the Connecticut River and proximity to major roads connecting New England cities. By 1794, under President Washington's authorization, the facility transitioned into a full manufacturing center, becoming the first federal armory in the United States. For nearly two centuries, Springfield Armory served as the primary manufacturer of U.S. military firearms, producing iconic weapons from flintlock muskets through the Springfield rifle and beyond. The original armory supplied weapons for every major American conflict and became renowned for precision manufacturing and innovation. However, by 1968, shifts in military procurement and budget constraints led the government to close the historic facility, ending nearly 200 years of federal operation. The Springfield Armory name might have faded into history were it not for Elmer C. Balance, who began producing civilian versions of the M14 rifle under the Springfield name in the early 1970s. In 1974, the Reese family acquired the company and relocated operations to Geneseo, Illinois, rescuing both the Springfield Armory name and the philosophy that had driven it for centuries. The Reese family transformed Springfield Armory into a thriving private enterprise, expanding from M1A rifles and 1911 pistols to develop innovative designs like the XD and Hellcat pistol series. Today, Springfield Armory continues to honor its heritage while pushing the boundaries of modern firearm design, serving civilians, law enforcement, and military customers globally.
